Just looks at this - 38,242 players online all at once on one server! I think that's a new record for Eve Online?
Reports of lag that night were not that loud as they have been in the past either so things are looking up...
Some guy posted something similar, wowing about the number of people online and you just have to expect some funny responses...

I lol'ed. 
Personally I think the single shard play style of Eve is excellent. You can't run away with your reputation and whether a good thing or not you can meet, or at least interact with, any player within the game.
