Bacon. Would you like something with that, Sir?

Submitted by Max Torps on Mon, 21/04/2008 - 11:39.

As previously mentioned Bacon has hit the headlines recently and literally divided the Eve community.

A knee-jerk reaction to prevent Bacon from working was to change the way local works. But if you look into this evil little application further a whole host of nastiness is lurking there.

1: It reads output from the logserver.exe that comes with every Eve client.

2: The output from the logserver gives tons of information which is just waiting to be manipulated.
See also what was removed and to be fair, these guys are not hiding a thing:

Quote:
By default, all system enter/exit, station enter/exit, and contact logon/logoff messages are logged to our central server. These messages can be filtered by standing to cloak your allies and friends or disabled completely from within the BACON client. These messages are anonymous -- no information is stored about who reported them. Per CCP's request, all reporting functionality was removed in 1.0.0.2.

Now you know what was removed from the CCP approved application, think for a moment what could appear in a non-approved application.

3: Bacon is open source. Normally angels sing from rooftops at this sort of thing but now anyone can hack the code and alter it to do whatever they want. So far, 100 distinct IP addresses have downloaded the source code.

4: I thought it was against the EULA... however CCP say not so... Verone sums it up here.

Quote:

1. You may not take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on the System.
2. You may not use your own or third-party software to modify any content appearing within the Game environment or change how the Game is played.
3. You may not use macros or other stored rapid keystrokes or other patterns of play that facilitate acquisition of items, currency, objects, character attributes, rank or status at an accelerated rate when compared with ordinary Game play. You may not rewrite or modify the user interface or otherwise manipulate data in any way to acquire items, currency, objects, character attributes or beneficial actions not actually acquired or achieved in the Game.
4. You may not use the Software, or any information accessible through the System, to bypass the System login architecture or create or provide any other means through which the System may be accessed and/or the Game may be played by others, as, for example, through server emulators.
5. You may not engage in any conduct that results in an Account containing items, objects, currency, character attributes, rank, or status that are inappropriate for the level or rank of the character contained in the Account, including without limitation arranging, making or accepting transfers of items to a character without adequate consideration, thereby augmenting or aggregating items in an Account and increasing its value for an Account sale.

The wider issue here is not getting rid of local.

It's asking, do we want to play a game where tools necessary to play it are addons to the game that not everyone will have access to?

Any CSM candidate that thinks this tool is good or harmless is a total buffoon and is just not seeing the bigger picture.

Do not be naive and think that other tools that essentially cheat are not available, they are and now after the release of this bacon program which is a handy framework to construct a logserver reader, more will be available.

CCP needs to either encrypt the logserver output, restrict output to harmless information or use another solution to render log readers unusable.

CCP have come through with a promise to get bacon taken off the menu!

Announced here, Lead GM Grimmi, CCP are now looking at ways of preventing log parsers from using the information provided by the LogServer.exe file.
