The Ultimate Game

It's frustrating isn't it?

You have a bunch of mates that you know and trust. You have played many games together and thoroughly enjoyed the honeymoon period of each one. You've known each other years and get on well.

Let's take a real example and choose LoTRO.

So there you are with your mates. All as cheery little hobbits prancing around the Shire killing goblins and orcs, er actually wolves and pigs and having a great old time.

You follow the quest lines and eventually start getting to the point where it's literally too much bother to do anything, slowly in game time but in as little as a few days in real time you all quit and drift back to your favourite games. This also happened while playing AoC...(enough said!)

My frustration with this? It's simple really. My all time favourite game and one that has captured my imagination like no other is Eve Online. Is it their favourite game? No.

One absolutely detests Eve and prefers SWG (gasp) and I've yet to get to the bottom of this, I suspect he was a victim of a Jita gank but he won't admit to anything.

One that I've given a 2 month game time code to so that he can play and level up for free... he's barely logged in as he's "too busy".

If you play Eve, I suspect you know what I mean when I say it ticks all the boxes.

It has PvP.
It has PvE.
Tradeskilling is great.
The community is fantastic.
It's shiny and colourful!
The devs are great (yes, really) I think they are absolutely awesome.
Gameplay is excellent.

I mean, what is there not to like?

Does anyone have any suggestions on a compelling argument I can make to these people who are great, but just don't play Eve?

I feel your pain

The truth is in life sooner or later the best of friends realize they have somethings they cannot do together. I have a few friends that will play EVE with me and have a blast, I have others that will just never get it.

There is no "compelling" arguement to give to people that just do not get EVE. You have to understand that EVE is a "deeper" game than anything I have seen in a long time. Deeper games just do not make a wide appeal.

There was a great game a few years back, Rules of Engagement II. The game was deep and rich starship combat simulator and yet dispite being an amazing game it never got a following because of the deep game play that required you to actually play the game, not just tag along.

Tag onlong gaming is the trend unfortunately. I mean games that pull you through them. For some people they want the easy route, others like us want the hard becuase to us the effort is more important than the goal.

Find and make new friends that enjoy this with you. You are not abandoning the old friends and still will do things with them, but rather making new friends for a different part of your life.

Thanks Edward. It wasn't perhaps the answer I wanted but it is the honest and true answer.

It seems my friends want to try Warhammer now... it's as if they are searching for that special game themselves yet are terrified to play Eve. Perhaps it's because deep down they know that Eve IS that special game and they don't wish to commit.

Anyway, I just wanted to post a response to you and thank you for taking the time out to reply.

I get this too, as the majority of my friends are console pad bludgeoning fools Sticking out tongue A few play on the PC, but they are more fans of the FPS, a genre which I have also spent many hours on. However, that's one of the things I like about it; I enjoy the independence of this game, and it gives me a reason to talk and play with who I want, rather than having to organise things around the needs of IRL friends. Plus, the game is AWESOME
